Centrifugal Compressor Overhaul Readiness Checklist

A centrifugal compressor overhaul is safer and more predictable when the plant defines the evidence, shutdown scope, inspection priorities, parts route, and return-to-service checks before disassembly begins.

Before the shutdown: define the technical baseline

Collect the compressor model and serial data, process or air duty, driver information, operating hours, previous overhaul reports, alignment records, vibration trends, alarm and trip history, oil analysis where available, cooler performance, control behavior, and known leakage or sealing concerns. Record the current operating condition before the shutdown so the post-service result can be compared with a real baseline.

Confirm the applicable manufacturer instructions, plant procedures, inspection criteria, safety requirements, lifting plan, isolation boundaries, tooling, specialist support, and documentation responsibilities. API requirements may influence the scope where they apply, but the equipment manual and agreed engineering procedure remain central.

Define the inspection and parts decision points

The planned scope may include bearings, seals, impellers, diffusers, clearances, rotor or pinion condition, lubrication components, coolers, filters, coupling, alignment, controls, instruments, valves, and auxiliaries. The exact inspection points depend on the compressor design and the authorized work package.

Separate parts into planned replacements, inspection-dependent items, and contingency spares. Confirm identification, lead time, storage condition, and release authority before the outage. This reduces the risk of finding a critical item after disassembly without an agreed sourcing route.

Control findings and scope changes during the overhaul

Use a findings register that records the component, observation, measurement, acceptance criterion, photograph, recommendation, customer decision, and effect on time or cost. A controlled findings process prevents informal scope expansion and preserves the technical reasoning behind repair or replacement decisions.

Do not close components before required inspections, measurements, cleanliness checks, and customer or quality hold points are complete. Preserve removed-part identification and final records in a form that operations and maintenance teams can use later.

Return-to-service evidence

Before startup, confirm assembly records, clearances, torque and locking checks where applicable, lubrication readiness, cooling and seal services, instrument checks, alignment, guards, interlocks, rotation, and the agreed commissioning procedure. During startup, record vibration, temperature, pressure, flow, control response, leakage observations, and alarm status against the pre-shutdown baseline.

The final report should state the work completed, findings, measurements, parts used, deferred recommendations, commissioning results, and the next monitoring or maintenance actions.
